Dear friend, Sunday’s Gospel reading was taken from the Gospel according to Luke 5:1-11. It’s the Gospel story of when Jesus meets Simon – (who is later renamed Peter by Jesus as found in the Gospel of Matthew 16:18). Jesus says to Simon Peter “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” Simon is very tired after a long, unsuccessful day of fishing but says to Jesus, “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.” Once back out Simon and his crew caught so many fish their nets were tearing and it was necessary to call to their partners in another boat to come and help. Both boats were filled with so many fish they were in danger of sinking more importantly because Simon was obedient to our Lord’s command they brought in a great catch.
How often do we tire after working so hard without any success that we give up and lose hope in ourselves and our abilities? How many of us forget to call upon the most divine power in heaven and on earth, God our Father, who will help us in our pursuits and if it be His will, we will succeed? If not, He will give us the wisdom, grace and courage to understand why not and the strength to start over.
Personally, I have not had it easy all my life and didn’t always make a ‘catch’. All because of my own doing; I made some very bad choices, and I’m reminded of them often in my life. I’m tired but I know and believe that if I discipline myself to obey God’s commands, I will overcome feeling tired and instead come to understand that bad choices can be turned into blessings. Blessings are possible once we humbly repent of those bad choices and sins and ask God for His mercy and forgiveness.
Dear friend, please, do not despair but hold on to God’s promise that He will guide you and sustain you all the days of your life. You need only obey His righteousness commands.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, how often do we tire of this life: of the bad choices and wrong moves we made and continue to make? Forgive us for our bad choices and at times for ignoring your will for our lives. Come to our aid and fill us with your wisdom and love to make better choices and decisions that will honor you, dear God. Fill us with your wisdom and grace to remain faithful to you in all we do so that we may set a shining example for those around us that they may come to know and love you more. We ask this in the name of your son our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen
May God be with you and may He continue to protect you and yours!
Peace, love, joy and thanksgiving in Christ Jesus, our Savior!
All life matters – from conception on!
