“Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?” Mark 4:41

Dear friend, one of my favorite Gospel readings is from the Gospel according to Mark Chapter 4:35-41.

I have printed it here for your convenience:

35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them, just as he was, in the boat. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great storm of wind arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care if we perish?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?” 41 And they were filled with awe, and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?”

How often do we find ourselves in the midst of troubles and we panic and cry out for God to help us? Isn’t it only natural to call for help when in a crisis? Then I wondered at the question Jesus posed to his disciples, “Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?” I find it very interesting that the disciples didn’t answer Jesus’ question but instead were ‘filled with awe’ and wondered who Jesus was that he held such a command over nature. I also wondered what I would do if I was with Jesus in a boat during a storm? Would I just sit and have faith that all would be well or would I run to Jesus and ask him to save me? We’re human so naturally we seek help when going through a difficult problem. After a while when we look back on past difficulties and recall how Jesus helped us through those times perhaps the only prayer we need to utter is ‘Dear Lord, I truly am in awe of you. Strengthen my belief in you and your amazing powers’.

How strong are you in your faith that you would be quiet and still and trust Jesus to get you through whatever you are going through?

Prayer: Dear God, time and again we have witnessed your wondrous deeds and yet there are times when we lack a genuine faith that you will faithfully take care of us. Forgive us, forgive our weak human nature, we believe, please strengthen our disbelief. Amen

May God be with you and may He continue to protect and guide you and yours!

Peace, love, joy and thanksgiving in Christ Jesus, our Savior!
